I wrote this piece to highlight the urgency and importance of generational healing. It speaks to the reality that trauma does not always end with one person—it can be passed down quietly through behaviors, beliefs, emotional patterns, and survival habits. When wounds go unaddressed, they often reappear in future generations in different forms, such as unhealthy attachments, toxic relationships, fear of vulnerability, or distorted views of education, success, identity, and self-worth.

This poem is both a plea and a reflection. It calls on my grandmother—and symbolically, the generations before her—to heal not only for themselves, but for those who come after them. It acknowledges that although I may not carry the same physical chains, I still feel the emotional and psychological weight of what was never healed.

Ultimately, this piece is about breaking cycles. It is about recognizing inherited pain, giving it language, confronting it with honesty, and choosing healing so future generations can experience the freedom we are still learning to embrace.

Heal, Grandma, the pain that runs through your veins,

Heal every injustice that still remains.

Heal all the battles you were forced to fight,

Heal every wound hidden deep out of sight.

Heal the brokenness echoing through generations,

Heal the burden of silent frustrations.

Heal the deep wounds now living in me,

Heal every fear I still struggle to see.

Heal the doubt that found a home in my mind,

Heal the insecurities I fight to leave behind.

Heal the trauma that was quietly passed down,

Heal every hurt buried beneath the crown.

Though there are no shackles around my feet,

My DNA still wrestles to believe I am free.

But I am free because my purpose speaks louder than my pain.

I am free because my past no longer defines my name.

I am free because every accomplishment reminds me

That I was created for more than survival.

I am free because the pain did not break me.

It built resilience, wisdom, and strength within me.

I am free because I chose healing over hiding,

Growth over bitterness, and faith over fear.

I am free because I can love without losing myself.

I am free because I can dream beyond what was given to me.

I am free because every step forward breaks another chain.

And most of all,

I am free because I am walking boldly in my destiny.
