What are you saying to you?
This month I’m going to get right to the point and share with you a very important principle from psychology called auto suggestion. I share this brief lesson in psychology because there is great value in possessing the understanding of how this principle works and affects every aspect of our lives, either positively or negatively.
Auto suggestion, also called self-suggestion or self-hypnosis, can be described as the internal dialogue and suggestions that we repeatedly make to ourselves. What we ruminate over in our minds and what predominates our thinking actually finds its way into the physical, tangible realities of our lives. This concept is actually rooted in science and works to our advantage or disadvantage whether we desire it to or not.
Napoleon Hill, in his insightful and captivating book The Law of Success, expounds on this concept when he writes, “if you fill your mind with doubt and unbelief in your ability to achieve, then the principle of Auto Suggestion takes this spirit of unbelief and sets it up in your subconscious mind as your dominating thought and slowly but surely draws you into a whirlpool of failure. But, if you fill your mind with radiant self- confidence, the principle of Auto Suggestion takes this belief and sets it up as your dominating thought and helps you master the obstacles that fall in your way until you reach the mountain-top of success.”
For this reason, it is so important to be mindful of what we are thinking and what we are allowing to enter our minds, which may influence the future directions of our thoughts. Better yet, why not make a conscious effort to feed your mind only that which will nourish and foster your positive self- growth? One way to accomplish this is to keep in your conscious awareness, i.e., your physical environment, positive affirmations and images that evoke inspiration and help you maintain a positive frame of mind.
So I urge you, Detroit, to take the time to invest in yourself this month, taking time for some self-reflection and making a conscious effort to replace any negative self-talk or physical representations present in your environment that are in direct opposition with what you desire most for your life, as this stimuli is counterproductive and will block you from achieving your personal best and living your dream life.
